Library of Trento and Euro&Promos together to ease tha pain of war

An ad hoc information desk will be run by Yuliya, a Ukrainian librarian, with a special focus on children who have fled from the East. A tangible sign of closeness to the wounded people destabilised by the Russian invasion, who have also found refuge in Trentino.

Enhancing the role of culture, making it available to all, to alleviate the pain of war.

In the current geopolitical situation, the virtuous collaboration between the Municipal Library of Trento and Euro&Promos, a Friulian company operating in the facility management sector which, with various operators, manages part of the front office services of the library itself, highlights the reciprocal desire to show solidarity with the Ukrainian people wounded and destabilised by the Russian invasion, with a special focus on the younger generations.

In concrete terms, an information desk has been set up at the Children’s Library in Piazza Dante, which will be manned by the librarian of Ukrainian origin, Yuliya Lenko, to promote the cultural services offered by the facility and inform the public of the vast heritage of works in original language – more than 100 for children and young people and over 200 for adults, with more to come in the next few weeks – that the Trento library boasts.

“First of all I would like to thank the Municipality of Trento for the help and support you offer to my compatriots both on the Italian territory and in Ukraine. A heartfelt thank you to all the citizens: you have shown your closeness and generosity and your help is invaluable in all its forms and expressions,’ Yuliya explains.

“First of all, I would like to thank the Municipality of Trento for the help and support you offer to my compatriots both in Italy and in Ukraine. A heartfelt thank you to all the citizens: you have shown your closeness and generosity and your help is invaluable in all its forms and expressions,’ Yuliya explains.

Yuliya, our precious collaborator, was born and raised in Ukraine, has been living in Trento for 12 years, graduated from the socio-psycho-pedagogical high school, and obtained a three-year degree in Social Work and a specialised degree in Methodology, organisation and evaluation of social services at the University of Trento. Her studies and professionalism over the years give her specific skills that can be put at the service of those who are currently in difficulty.

“The library has made a precise choice to pay attention to the different linguistic communities present in the territory, both by acquiring collections of books in non-European languages and by the presence, strongly desired, of librarians with these skills,” explain the Municipality of Trento.

“In this phase the active role of the library as a treasure chest of culture and guardian of the word for all its users is fundamental. Our task at this time is to be able to guarantee young readers the keys to access culture, and access to culture is through reading.

In this period of great destabilisation and fragility,” says Yuliya, “we want to show our closeness to each of these families and therefore launch a project to support them in this very delicate moment. For this reason we have decided to start by organising information desks in Ukrainian, which aim to promote the services offered by the library.”

“The service is operational at the Palazzina Liberty every Friday from 2.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. This is a great opportunity for citizens but above all for all the people who, fleeing from the harshness of the conflict, have found refuge in Trentino.

Over the next few weeks, reading sessions will also be organised for the Ukrainian children currently hosted in the area. A small, great gesture of solidarity and humanity that at the same time proves to be a way of deepening the value and beauty of a culture that has never been as close to common feeling as it is today.
